Habits Which Makes You Slim

Dear Reader,

It's easy to make poor food choices when you're on the go, away from a familiar environment and without your support system. To succeed in staying slim, you'll need a battle plan you can rely on to help you resist the temptations life puts in your path.

At work...

- Bring your own healthy snack to work, so you won't be tempted to satisfy your natural hunger in a less healthy way.

- If you see temptation, stop and ask yourself, "Am I going to feel better if I have this?" Questioning establishes the habit of stoppingot think about what you want instead of reacting. Saying no (unless you really do want the treat) is what helps to replace the snacking habit and reinforce healthier choices.

- Try not to snack while you work. Chew gum, drink water or try mints to keep your mouth busy without filling it with food.

At home...

- Create visual signals for yourself, like turning of the lights in the kitchen after dinner and cleanup are finished. This is a real, visible signal to your body that eating is done for today.

- Don't bring home any food that will be tempting.

- When you bring groceries in, prepare your healthy snacks right then, so they're ready to go.

- Make sure you have good-for-you ingredients such as lentils, black eyed peas, wasabi peas and nuts on hand so that you're more likely to make healthy foods. Not keeping ingredients for your favorite indulgence in the house is also a smart move.

- Don't eat standing at the fridge, while watching TV or reading emails. Eating like this is mindless and you end up eating far more than you realize.

- If you really want to snack at night, try a cup of chocolate flavored almond milk because it tastes great and has lots of protein to help you feel full and satisfied.

When grocery shopping...

- When you start food shopping, start in the produce area and shop the perimeter of the store first. When the cart is filling up with healthy foods, this makes you less likely to toss some calorie-laden snacks in there. It's a mental game to play with yourself.

- Never bring your spouse or children in shopping with you. If you have non-healthy eaters with you, they're sure to throw unhealthy junk food in too, and you don't want to be tempted by that. If they want snacks, let them buy them and keep them from you.

- Never, ever shop when you're hungry, overstressed or having a bad day.

At a party...

- Practice the "rule of one". Let yourself have one small cake, cookie or other favorite dessert. You won't feel deprived, you're making a conscious choice and you'll get to really enjoy a well-deserved treat.

- Eat something light before you go to a party so you won't fill up on as much of the tasty, calorie laden treats you're sure to find there.

- Wear a more fitted outfit so you won't be as comfortable if your body is full to bursting with food.

Habits Which Makes You Slim Continued...

- Don't consider social event meals as "treats", just think of them as regular meals. If you don't eat something at home, don't indulge in it at an event or party.

Eating out...

- Research restaurants and keep a list of your favorite ones that offer healthy, low calorie (but good tasting) menu options.

- Order an appetizer as your entrée, or try a luncheon portion. You might also ask to have half of a dinner sized portion put in a "to go" container before it reaches the table so eating what's on your plate won't be so costly in terms of calories.

- Watch the drinks... alcohol, whipped cream topped coffee drinks or even soda can be loaded with calories, so be careful what you choose - zero calorie water with lemon (or lime) is always delicious and refreshing.

To your good health,
